YouTubeβ€”for learning concepts wordβ€”for writing assignment outlookβ€”for information

Digital Tech Warm-Up

YouTube- helps me to understand concepts at a deeper level by combining explanations and different examples. Concern: the biggest concern would be overrelience and unable to have the authentic voice, not being work hard since it would give the information that they want in a second. Classroom idea: A flashcard tool designed for classes like environmental zoology that combines strict spelling practice with phylogeny tree learning. It would test you on scientific names by making you type the exact spelling, correcting every mistake until it’s perfect, while also linking each organism to an interactive phylogenetic tree so you can see where it fits in evolution. It would help memorize both the correct name and its position in the tree, with repeated exposure through spaced repetition and visual mapping to strengthen recall.

IPad - take notes for class Netflix - online platform to binge watch shows/movies IPhone - communication device

Digital Tech Warm-Up

Quizlet - me and quizlet are best friends. It provides information from other individuals on a specific topic that is relative in a variety of ways Concern: I fear people have become too reliant on digital technology in education, which makes it hard to tell the real from the fake. Although it has its benefits, people misuse it as an assistive device, instead using it to narrate their own voice and self-efficacy. Classroom idea: I have no idea

Google Docs- Use it to do writing assignments. Grammalry- Used for my grammar. Moodle-Use it for my assignments.,

Digital Tech Warm-Up

These tools are just convenient and take a lot of the load off me when it comes to school, especially since I'm not the best at writing in general. Concern: I think we will start relying on it too much, and it doesn't help with my spelling at all. Also, apps like Chat will be harmful to people's learning and will make them rely on ChatGPT. Classroom idea: A spelling bee app. This could be a fun, simple thing that helps people, especially when there's a prize at the end. This could be repetition.

1: google docs 2: YouTube videos 3: notes app and Microsoft calendar

Digital Tech Warm-Up

Using my notes app and online calendar I have a much better time remembering what all I have coming up, what is due, and making to do list that I can refer back to throughout my day and week. I also use YouTube for my actual classwork to watch extra lesson videos over topics covered in class that i might need more time to understand than the time given when they are taught. Concern: I don’t want artificial intelligence to be the main thing people go to to solve their problems. I believe it is not only bad for the environment but also takes aways critical problem solving skills from students. I will say that I myself have used it in desperate situations where I have felt stuck and confused for assignments in classes that I struggle in. But personally it has only hindered my understanding in the long run Classroom idea: I would design a tool that works with students to offer further structure outside of class. Offering study tools, further explanation, visual examples and other forms of resources they could use

Digital Tech Warm-Up

I can listen to music anywhere even if there's no wifi. Concern: Some of these websites have access to your personal information Classroom idea: I would make an app where classmates can discuss classwork and catch up on any class announcements.

1. Social media 2. Streaming (movies & TV shows) 3. Ai apps (chat gpt & google gemini)

Digital Tech Warm-Up

When using things like chat gpt and Gemini, for my math hw for example, I ask it to show me step by step how to do it and I can learn quickly and effectively. Concern: I worry that AI is destroying our planet and I do not want to be apart of it. Classroom idea: I would have my students use AI to help them make study guides for their exams based off the notes they take in class.

Google Calendar - Organize Classes, meetings and tasks FreeNotes - Write Notes on my iPad Clock - Setting Timers for certain activities

Digital Tech Warm-Up

YouTube whenever I need help with visualization for a certain topic for any of my classes, some classes heavily rely on your ability to be able to see how it works and it really helps a lot. Concern: One of the struggles I am afraid about is the availability of real reliable sources in our day and age where you can fake any source or information as much as you want and people will still believe without actually fact checking. Classroom idea: Deeper learning goal. I would use real life applications to let them see how what they are learning is actually going to be useful for them and their aspirations.

Baalu Girma (1970). Oromay This novel tells the story of Ethiopia during a difficult period, focusing on war, personal struggles, and the challenges people face under a strict government. The book highlights how individuals try to stay honest, brave, and resilient even when life is extremely difficult. Reading Oromay is inspiring because it shows the importance of perseverance and courage, motivating me to face challenges in my own learning and to approach my studies with determination and patience.

Five Years North

Chris Temple and Zach Ingrasci, with Jenna Kelly

Five Years North is a documentary following Luis, who is a migrant from Guatemala. I truly love this documentary because not only does it show his side, but it also shows the other side of an ICE agent and gives their own perspective. To cut it short, I really love this documentary because he says he wakes up and gives it his all for his family, and he hopes that one day he'll get to see them again. Which makes me sad knowing my mother might have similar experiences. Knowing that I can see my loved ones makes me grateful and motivates me to give it my all.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

Stephen Covey

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is centered around seven principles for both personal and interpersonal effectiveness, it promotes goal setting, lifelong growth, and responsibility. This book it meaningful because it highlights that inner motivation is more successful than just quick success strategies. It connects to learning because it encourages the readers to take responsibility for their own goals and to show that learning is a continuous process. Covey, Stephen R. How to do Nothing

Jenny Odell

This book is about taking a different perspective on the society we live in and recognize the extent to which the average person over-works themselves and over consumes leading to burnout and feeling drained. It is significant and meaningful because it made me have a different perspective my life and critique things about my mentality that lead to myself being burned out and drained. This book points out things you might over-look in your life that are programmed and not the way one should live their lives. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime

Mark Haddon

Haddon, M. (2003). The curious incident of the dog in the night-time. Doubleday. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time follows the story of Christopher, a fifteen-year-old autistic boy, as he investigates the murder of his neighbor's dog, Wellington. What started as a simple investigation quickly turned into an unexpected discovery about Christopher's mother. Throughout the book, Christopher is trying to create a pattern of habits that allows him to feel in control which mirrors me as a person and as a learner in particular. At the end, Christopher learnt to adapt (in his own way) to the changes that he didn’t have control over.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

Stephen R. Covey

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (Covey) explains some important traits (being proactive, starting with the end in mind, independence and interdependence, the art of understanding, etc) on how to live a fulfilling life. This book motivates me to continue learning because it gives me a different lens to see and experience the world around me. It helped me to see my flaws and proposes ways to walk through these flaws. It made me understand that perfection is not the goal, but using the 1% rule to get better everyday.

My drive to explore and get a better understanding of myself and the world around me.

What Made Maddie Run

Kate Fagan

This book is a nonfiction book about a college track athlete who seemed to have a perfect live and had a social media full of joy, but this was all masking how she was struggling with depression that led to her taking her own life. Maddie's family, friend, and teammates didn't understand or see the extend of her struggles, therefore, this book shows how important it is to know what to look for in mental health struggle and see the pressure but on college students and college athletes. This book helped shed light on mental health among young people in high-pressure environments. While this book might not be all about motivation, I think it helps show me it okay to take a step-back and care for myself in a place like Berea where work, athletics, labor, academics and socializing can seem like too much. There have been multiple times that have I spread myself too thin or taken on too much at once so being okay with slowing down and taking time for myself has become more important. I also thing this book can help show students they aren't alone when it comes to struggles with mental health and knowing this motivates me to be okay with not always being able to put in 110%

My Brother

Jamaica Kincaid

Kincaid, J. (1997). My brother. Farrar, Straus and Giroux In this non-fiction book, Jamaica Kincaid, tells the story of her brother, who died of AIDS in Antigua. It addresses difficult family truths, poverty, HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean, and the emotional distance between siblings. This book has motivational value to me because of my own connections to HIV/AIDS as a Caribbean activist and advocate in my younger years. I was motivated by this text to continue my work in the field of HIV/AIDS and sexual behavior health.
