Introduction

Yet emerging research in cognitive science, neurodiversity studies, and culturally responsive pedagogy challenges this narrow view. Professional teaching standards reinforce this shift, the Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (InTASC) identifies differentiated instruction and responsiveness to learner diversity as core competencies for effective educators (Council of Chief State School Officers, 2013). This paper argues that adopting neurodiversity-affirming pedagogical practices in higher education leads to improved academic outcomes, greater student belonging, and a more equitable learning environment.
By examining findings from How People Learn II (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2018), alongside scholarship from disability studies and critical education theory, this paper demonstrates that the problem is not how students learn, but how institutions teach.
The Neurodiversity Framework
Neurodiversity, a term coined by sociologist Judy Singer in the late 1990s, refers to the natural variation in human brain function and behavioral traits. Rather than viewing conditions such as autism, ADHD, and dyslexia as deficits, the neurodiversity paradigm recognizes them as part of the normal spectrum of human variation (Silberman, 2015). This shift has profound implications for education.
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (2018) emphasized that "learning is a dynamic process that is shaped by the interplay between biology, context, and culture" (p. 15). Furthermore, Ladson-Billings (1995) argued that culturally relevant pedagogy,teaching that affirms students' identities and lived experiences,leads to deeper engagement and academic success. Combining culturally responsive approaches with neurodiversity-affirming practices creates learning environments where all students can thrive.
Counterargument and Rebuttal
Critics may argue that accommodating neurodiverse learners requires lowering academic standards or is simply impractical given limited resources. However, this view conflates accommodation with diminishment. As Dunne (2024) demonstrated, organizations that embrace neurodiversity often outperform those that do not, because cognitive diversity drives innovation and problem-solving. In education, the evidence similarly shows that flexibility in instruction does not lower rigor; it makes rigor accessible.
Conclusion
The case for neurodiversity-affirming pedagogy is supported by robust evidence from cognitive science, education research, and real-world practice. Higher education institutions that continue to rely on one-size-fits-all approaches not only fail neurodiverse students but also miss the broader benefits of cognitive diversity. By embracing frameworks like UDL and culturally responsive teaching, colleges and universities can create classrooms where different minds are recognized not as problems to be fixed, but as strengths to be cultivated.
